Meet John – Founder of CBL Training and Consulting (CBLTAC)

Experience. Leadership. Dedication.

John established the CBLTAC in 2004 with a commitment to delivering top-tier training in bio-psychology/human dynamics related topics, communication, de-escalation, crisis intervention, safety, and personal development.

As a sergeant with a major California law enforcement agency, John led a crisis intervention training unit and earned an Advanced Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification. His career includes street patrol; undercover auto theft and drug investigations; plainclothes assignments in general crimes; and service as a police academy instructor in criminal law, impaired driving, and physical training. He is also a certified Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) and DRE instructor, ICI homicide investigator, crime scene investigator (CSI), and TSA Behavioral Detection Specialist, among other advanced certifications.

Prior to his law enforcement career, John worked as an Outdoor Adventure Education Supervisor with at-risk youth for the Tulare County Office of Education and as a Child Care Worker in a live-in substance abuse treatment facility. He also served as a US Forest Service Wildland Firefighter in the Sierra Nevada mountains (Sierra Crew 2/Kings River Hotshots).

John is an honorably discharged U.S. Army veteran, having served enlistments in the 75th Ranger Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, and as an augmented member of Joint Task Force – Full Accounting (JTF-FA) in Vietnam. He currently serves as a senior NCO (E-8/Master Sergeant) in the California Military Department, is a Senior Military Emergency Management Specialist, and NCO Academy instructor and course manager.

With thousands of hours of instructional experience, John is a POST-certified academy instructor, scenario coordinator, and Institute for Criminal Investigations and Instructor Development Institute Level II instructor. He has trained a diverse range of participants from government organizations, private entities, and individual citizens across domestic and international platforms and all levels of government.

John’s experiences include surviving a deadly police combat shooting, witnessing the loss of a fellow officer, and sustaining gunshot wounds in the line of duty. These experiences drive his deep commitment to personal, employee, and public safety and he deeply understands the effects of post-traumatic stress.

Academically, John graduated Summa Cum Laude (4.0 GPA) from Columbia Southern University with a Bachelor of Science in General Psychology, focusing on bio-psychology, resilience, and outdoor adventure.

Outside of his professional life, John has been happily married since 1996, is a devoted father, an outdoor enthusiast and adventurer, an ultramarathon runner (100 miles), Ironman triathlete (140.6 miles), holds United States Parachute Association "A" and "B" freefall and Round Canopy Parachute Associate parachute wings and licenses, and is a SCUBA diver (SSI open water, PADI advanced, and U.S. Navy SCUBA-NSTCP Class 99-040S, Ford Island).
